The History of Gil Blas follows a young man from Spain who leaves home to seek his fortune. Along the way, he experiences many adventures and meets people from different levels of society. He works for masters, encounters both kindness and dishonesty, and gradually learns how selfish and corrupt people can be.

Through humor and satire, the novel shows that luck, intelligence, and adaptability are often necessary to succeed in life.

A stunning set of 4 full leather binding books, with an extremely unique spine. Each spine is adorned with a harvest motif depicting a sickle, a gardening rake, and a watering jug. This set was published by The printing house of Didot the Younger who was a an active publisher from the early 1700s to early 1800s. There isn't a publication date, but these are likely from the mid 1700s. This set is profusely illustrated, and written in French. The title pages states ‘Edition adorned with intaglio engravings by the best artists of Paris.’

Dimensions: 8” by 5 1/4”.

State of Preservation: Some minor wear to the leather, as well as the first volume is slightly split along the spine (as seen in the last photo) however it is structurally sound.

Photos are an integral part of the description. Lighting may subtly affect the appearance of colors and finishes on pieces (I usually photograph in direct sunlight). Actual colors may vary depending on your screen and lighting conditions.
